What does it mean to be made in the image of God? Genesis 1:26 says, “Let us make human beings in our image,
in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” Moses (the assumed writer) was using a reference common in his age human rulers being representations on earth and in human form of the gods that pagan people worshipped. The human ruler reflected, contained many of the characteristics of the god so people could see what the god was like. It was not surprising then that many ancient rulers came to be considered gods themselves.
