The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program has been viewed as a niche qualification suitable for only a small group of students, over the years transformed into a full fledged international program that are accepted and well-regarded around the world. That transformation has been more apparent in perception of IB program as passport into university.

One of the main reasons for the changing view of the IB, is that it is increasingly seen as a good preparation for higher education, developing the kinds of skills that students will need at university.

This trend are also proven by the quality graduates from Sekolah Pelita Harapan and recent news of early acceptance to prestigious universities around the world. Along with the university acceptance, as a great milestones for our school, in 2016, 32 out of 102 grade 12 students from Lippo Village campus received scholarship offers from 44 universities with the total scholarship value of USD$ 567,931.00

An article in The Telegraph newspaper says, “IB students also have a good chance of seeing their applications accepted. Such sixth-formers make up around 10 percent of applicants to King’s but around 15 percent of undergraduates.” And “Nor is it just at UK universities that the IB is well-regarded. The combination of skills the diploma requires makes it a popular entry route into universities worldwide, says Peter Fidczuk, UK development and recognition manager for the International Baccalaureate Organisation. This is particularly the case in the US, he adds, where undergraduates normally take a range of courses in their first year before specializing.”

All IB diploma students complete an extended essay, a 4,000-word project on a topic of their choosing. This requires independent research, as well as an ability to think widely around a subject. Although students on an A-level program have the option of a comparable piece of work with the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), the fact that this is compulsory with the IB is a big advantage.

IB students also take a course on critical thinking, called Theory of Knowledge, which nurtures the kind of open and inquiring mind that is needed at university. The IB also means students do not significantly narrow down their options for higher education when they make their subject choices at 16.

As Sevenoaks School head teacher Katy Ricks mention in an article, “Why do I believe this so strongly? The IB develops students that top universities want: students with expert subject knowledge; with the skills good students require – research, essay writing, footnoting; but above all, with the spirit of intellectual inquiry and critical thinking, the ability to challenge, argue and ask questions. Universities are clearly aware of this: the offer rate and acceptance rate for IB Diploma students is notably above other post-16 qualifications, including A levels, with an 87 per cent acceptance rate for UK-domiciled IB Diploma students last year. And in the US, the IB Diploma is a sought-after passport to top universities from Stanford to Yale.”

 

Success in International Baccalaureate classes can lead to a competitive edge on university applications and perhaps even credit toward college-level courses. While the benefits of IB classes are often compared to those of Advanced Placement courses, IB classes are less common and have a distinct assessment approach. (US News & World Report)
