Say No to Boredom: 10 Stay-at-home Activity Ideas for the Whole Family

During this stay-at-home period, families need to strategize their daily activities to tackle boredom and become more productive when there is no work left to do. Without the right strategy, each of your family members will only get stuck in front of their gadgets with minimal interaction with each other. We think these 10 activities are great to do involving all members of the family:

MASTERCHEF IN THE MAKING: COOK OR BAKE TOGETHER!

Cook or bake your favorite food and desserts together! Make sure the dads and the children are involved too. Cooking or baking together will unify your family as well as teaching your children to have patience, learn to appreciate the process and gratitude. It is important too to teach your kids about nutrition and the importance of eating healthy food.

GARDENING TIPS: DON’T THROW YOUR VEGGIES SCRAPS!

Instead of immediately throwing your cooking scraps, why don’t you regrow some of your vegetables? This cooking activity can be turned into an easy, home gardening activity by regrowing your vegetables from the cooking scraps. Your children can learn about how plants grow and it will give them firsthand knowledge rather than only learning it in the science classroom. Find out how it is done by watching this video!

GET ACTIVE & MOVE YOUR BODY: DO AN EASY OR LOW-IMPACT AEROBIC EXERCISE!

Dance aerobic is probably one of the most fun workouts that you and your kids can do. Aerobic exercise has many health benefits such as improving cardiovascular health, lowering blood pressure, helping regulates blood sugar, regulating weight, and many more.

RELEASE YOUR INNER-MUSICIAN: PLAY MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS TOGETHER

Your children’s music lesson should not stop during this quarantine. If you have more than one child who plays different musical instruments, make a mini home concert with them performing musical pieces! Just having a guitar at home? No worries, just grab your guitar, and sing your family’s favorite songs together.

HAVE FUN & PLAY: PLAY FUN GAMES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

There should not be a boring time when you get your family together playing fun games! Playing fun games does not have to be super complicated, just a simple water bottle flip challenge will keep all the family members entertained. Or, if you have more time and feeling more creative, try to play games that require teamwork and collaboration.

MAKE SOME POPCORN, IT’S MOVIE NIGHT!

Watching a movie together will never get old. Not able to go to your usual local cinema? Stop pouting about it, because you have plenty of time to turn your living room into a mini cinema theater. Watch a movie together but make sure that it is family-friendly and age-appropriate. After watching the movie, discuss it with the whole family on what values or lessons that they learn from it. Watching a movie can be transformed into an educational session too.

GET THEATRICAL: WEAR SOME COSTUMES, MAKE A SCRIPT, AND PLAY IN A DRAMA

Instead of just watching a movie, why don’t you bring it to reality? Do a roleplay in your family by wearing costumes and act it out. Discuss who should be who and make sure everyone has a part. You can bring Star Wars, Avengers, or all-time favorite Disney stories into life!

BE A LANGUAGE-WHIZ: ADVANCE YOUR ENGLISH AND OTHER LANGUAGE SKILLS

Staying at home can make you and your children much smarter by advancing your English or even learn a new language. You can either perfect your English speaking skills by doing a daily conversation or learn new vocabs and idioms together. Already mastered your English skills? Expand your horizon by learning new languages such as Mandarin, French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and many more!

BE SQUEAKY CLEAN: DEEP CLEAN YOUR HOUSE & DECLUTTER UNNECESSARY THINGS

One of the ways to keep your whole family member healthy in the midst of a virus outbreak is deep cleaning your house. Get your antiseptic and disinfectant, and clean your house all the way through to the places that you probably rarely clean. Share the cleaning jobs to all family members, and if you have a toddler kid, you can teach them the simplest way of cleaning: throwing things in the trash bin. Also, don’t forget to declutter your house by throwing your old, unnecessary things or damaged furniture.

FAMILY ALTAR: BRING YOUR FAMILY CLOSER TO GOD

Self-isolation or quarantine may be the best opportunity for us to get our family closer to God. During this self-isolation time, attending Sunday service at church is not available, so bring your church home. While watching Sunday service online is our only option, it is also important especially for dads to take the role of the priest in the family. Dads can lead family worship and give a short sermon, while moms lead the worship songs. More interactive devotion time is also a good idea by discussing a certain passage in the Bible and ask each child to reflect on it. This is also the best time to do a planned Bible reading as one family. Read the Bible together sequentially, and even if you have done it in the past, the Bible will always have a way to speak to us and quench our thirsty soul, as it is the Living Word of God.
