SPH Kemang Village Moms Fellowship Movie Day Out with Childhood Cancer Patients

World Health Organization (WHO) stated that cancer is a leading cause of death for children, with more than 300,000 new cases diagnosed each year among children aged 0-19 years[1]. Childhood cancer patients in Indonesia are also increasing in recent years. Yayasan Kanker Anak Indonesia (YKAI), or the Indonesian Child Cancer Foundation, stressed that every year, children with cancer are increasing for seven percent and most of them come from underprivileged families[2].

This year, God has given SPH Kemang Village Moms Fellowship the opportunity to collaborate with YKAI to help children who are fighting cancer. The founder of YKAI is Sallyana Sorongan (Ibu Sally) was an SPH KV parent, thus making the collaboration possible.

On Monday, February 25, 2019, SPH KV Moms Fellowship held the Movie Day Out at Lippo Mall Kemang with children cancer patients from YKAI. The event was started with breakfast and a magic show at PappaRich restaurant. It followed by watching “Keluarga Cemara” movie together at the XXI. Most importantly, SPH KV Moms Fellowship has raised a significant amount of money to be donated for YKAI’s children cancer medical treatment. One of the moms, Dian Purba, gave her testimony:

“As a mother, having the opportunity to serve the children from YKAI was such an honor. I feel truly blessed to be given the chance to share a fun day that is full of laughter with them. I am also truly grateful to be a part of a loving and generous community in SPH KV, because, without the support of the parents, teachers, and staff, this outreach program with the YKAI children would not have happened. By the grace of our Lord Jesus, we were also able to collect a substantial amount of donation that can support the medical treatment of these precious children. What we did may not solve all the problems that these children have, but we were able to become one piece of the puzzle that shows a beautiful picture of these children’s lives that I believe God has planned for them. I pray that the SPH KV community will continue to serve others with the love of Christ and bring glory and honor to His name.”

Besides the Moms Fellowship, some of the teachers and students also joined this event. One of them was Mr. Benji Llorente, SPH KV Music Director, and he gave his testimony:

“When I was asked to help out with the event our PAG organized for the cancer patients, I did not realize how much of an impact that short interaction with them would have one me. I thought I’d do it to have them see a part of my world, have them enjoy what I enjoy most–making music and use it as an avenue to entertain and be entertained. While the children did sing and dance and respond with gleeful hearts to music, I saw the power of music transcend pain and suffering. These children must have bad days, days of unbearable pain (the kind I do not know of) but that day was a day where they benched pain and told pain “not today”. I have enjoyed every bit of my time with the kids from YKAI. They have shown me what it means to be resilient and how to live life at the moment. I am thankful for our PAG and our KV community for letting me be part of their ministry.”

Indiana Burton-Menajang, a Grade 9 SPH KV student, also participated in this event:

“My experience with Yayasan Kanker Anak Indonesia was a real eye-opening moment. During the short meet and greet with the kids, I found out the heart-breaking reality that some kids don’t have easy access to healthcare. I was able to have a great time dancing and singing with the kids and, although it was only for a while, I was able to leave knowing I put a smile on someone’s face. Sometimes it may not change the world, but changing a person’s life makes a difference because together we can all make a difference.”

For more than seven years, YKAI has helped many families with childhood cancer and raised people’s awareness of childhood cancer in Indonesia. We hope that through this collaboration, SPH Kemang Village community can bless many childhood cancer patients so that they will receive the best treatment they need
