Maximizing Students’ School Holiday with SPH Summer Program 2017

For the majority of parents, they view a school’s summer holiday as the most difficult time to find productive activities for their children[1]. During a long school holiday, students may eventually experience learning losses if they do not engage in educational activities[2]. “Many children…watch television or play video games, essentially left to the mercy of vegetation technology,” said Justin Thomas in his article in The National news portal[3]. It is very unfortunate when the student’s holiday time is wasted, because we know that God wants us to use the time well.

A summer course or program is one of the best options for students to maximize their holiday time well. Numerous studies prove that summer programs have many academic benefits, in which students may enhance their understanding and skills through active, dynamic, and creative learning. A study from the Center for Talented Youth finds that summer program experiences improved students’ skills and heightened their interest in certain subjects[4].

From 12-14 June 2017, three Sekolah Pelita Harapan (SPH) campuses conducted Summer Programs: SPH Lippo Village, SPH Kemang Village, and SPH Sentul City. Taught by experts and experienced instructors, students could enjoy various creative programs, ranging in activities from a cooking class, to exploration in Fun Science/Science World and a Robotics class, to enhancing math skills in the Mathematics course.  Students could also expand their writing talents via the Young Author and Ivy Oxbridge programs, in addition to the English course offered.

The students expressed their gratitude to the instructors for creating fun, exciting, and useful activities. Reiner, a participant in the Science World class, remarked that the lesson about taking care of the body was highly useful and easily applicable. Other students also enjoyed the cooking class, in which they learned how to make such a highly technical pastry and dessert. The Ivy Oxbridge for Future program provided helpful writing advice for students in grades 10-12 through workshops.  Students in this program can use skills acquired from this course that can increase their chances of gaining acceptance at some top universities.

“I definitely recommended this summer school to many. I learned some of the things that weren’t taught at school, that are obviously important for university applications. Worth spending my time and money in,” said Michelle Vanny Lim, who participated in Ivy Oxbridge program.

We believe that time is highly valuable and God wants us to use our time responsibly, even during our school holidays. As Paul states in the Bible, “Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil” (Eph. 5:15-16). Therefore, SPH seeks to educate both parents and students in how to spend their holidays with meaningful activities, which aim to help students glorify God more through their knowledge and skills.
