Through our groundbreaking research project, we invite your child to explore the fascinating concept of transiency during the Great Depression in the United States. We’ll examine the historical context and the pivotal role of the Federal Transient Service (FTS), which, from 1933-1935, provided aid to unemployed men and their families during this turbulent time. Our investigation will highlight the trials of mobile populations and the establishment of transient bureaus and work camps in 40 states and Washington, D.C., providing vital support to those who faced rejection from local communities.As a student research assistant, your child will participate in an insightful research project led by Dr. Jeffrey Cole from Geneva College. This project centers around the experiences of men who received assistance from transient bureaus during the Great Depression. Students will dive into historical research by examining original documents from the National Archives.  
 
This course will enhance students’ search, analysis, and writing abilities. They will also explore the interplay between Christian values and societal responses to the needy, ultimately gaining a deeper understanding of President Roosevelt’s New Deal and the Federal Transient Service’s role in the broader context of the Great Depression. By collaborating in this concise and impactful research project, you’ll acquire significant skills and knowledge related to this historical era.
