Leading the Conversation: SPH Kemang Village Teachers Speak at National Conference

On January 31, 2026, SPH Kemang Village was proudly represented at the Binus x Mentari Educators Conference, a premier gathering of education professionals from across Indonesia and abroad. Centered on the timely theme, "Celebrating Human Learning in the Age of AI," the conference explored the vital balance between emerging technology and human-centered pedagogy. Two of our own educators—Calum Walker (Makerspace Coordinator) and Lycel Arboleda (Kindergarten Teacher)—were invited as featured speakers to share their expertise on maintaining the heart of education in a digital world.
Calum Walker led two compelling sessions focusing on the irreplaceable value of hands-on creativity. Addressing the common student mindset of "If AI can do it, why should I?", Calum proposed that educators must celebrate the "beautiful struggle" of the human creative process. Using Design Thinking as a framework, he demonstrated how setting students up with real-world problems helps them develop grit and a sense of purpose. "We are uniquely created by God to create wonderful things," Calum shared. "If we are to use AI, it should be like a powerful tool that enhances our ideas rather than doing the work for us."
Bringing a vital perspective to the early years, Lycel Arboleda presented a session titled "Heart Before Hardware: Protecting the Wonder of Early Learning in the Age of AI." Lycel challenged the notion that technology is the center of the classroom, instead advocating for AI to be used as a behind-the-scenes assistant that frees up teachers' time for authentic relationships and deep observation. Her message served as a powerful reminder that technology’s highest purpose is to return educators to the heart of their work: nurturing the innate wonder of early childhood. This contribution to the national educational dialogue underscores SPH’s commitment to thoughtful, faith-based leadership in the future of learning.
