Finding My Voice and a Lifetime of Faith: My Journey at SPH Pluit Village

Mary Kim

Class of 2023

SPH Pluit Village

My journey at Sekolah Pelita Harapan Pluit Village began in the 4th grade. Like many new starts, it was daunting. I stepped into a community where many of my classmates had already known each other for years, and as a young student, that social barrier felt quite high. I remember the quiet worry of wondering if I would ever truly fit in or find my place in such a tight-knit group.

However, over the years, those worries didn't just fade—they were replaced by a profound sense of belonging. What started as a new school quickly became my second home.

The turning point for me wasn't a single event, but rather the consistent, quiet kindness of the people around me. The teachers and staff at SPH Pluit Village are truly something special. They often went far beyond their job descriptions to connect with me, offering encouragement when I was hesitant and pushing me to branch out when I was comfortable.

Their unwavering support became the foundation of my self-confidence. Because they believed in me, I finally felt empowered to step out of my shell and simply be myself.

Beyond my personal confidence, I am most grateful for how SPH nurtured my faith. It’s one thing to hear about Christian values; it’s another thing entirely to see them lived out every single day. I was surrounded by mentors and peers who didn't just speak about Christ’s character—they reflected it in their work, their kindness, and their integrity.

This environment helped me understand that reflecting God's character isn't just about what we say, but about how we serve and interact with the world around us.

I graduated as part of the Class of 2023, and looking back, I realize that SPH gave me so much more than an education. It gave me a second family. Whether I am pursuing my next chapter at university or eventually stepping into my career, I move forward with the realization that no matter how far I travel from home, I carry the support of this community with me.

I am no longer that hesitant 4th grader; I am a woman grounded in my faith and ready for the future, knowing I have a foundation that will last a lifetime.
