From Fear to Initiative: How I Found My Voice at SPH

David

Grade 12 Student

SPH Lippo Village

When I entered SPH I was worried about going into a new environment where I was unfamiliar with both the curriculum and community.

The worries that I had ironically were the reasons why i wanted to move to SPH. I wanted to challenge myself and plunge into a new environment and community, hoping I could adapt and flourish as a result.

What made a deep difference was the people in the school: teachers, staff, and students alike. Everyone was very welcoming and genuinely willing to help in any way they could. This helped me adapt to the IB curriculum as well as integrate well into the community where I met and made new friends.

Joining clubs like THE HOPE Indonesia aided significantly in my adjustment to SPH. This helped me familiarize with the school and its people while also helping me pursue my passion in initiating and participating in community-driven initiatives.

The SPH community has supported me by facilitating growth for my interests and ambitions. This was clearly the case during my Personal Project and Extended Essay. They allowed me to pursue and discover more about what I was passionate about through a strategic and structured process.

Overall, the community and school have opened my eyes to action and initiative since I joined in Grade 10. I realize that impact can be made as long as initiative can be taken. This encourages me to pursue more community-driven projects in the future driven by this newfound confidence that action, no matter how small, can generate impact and make a difference.

I now see things through a critical and evaluative lens. Rather than taking information in blindly, I have learnt to filter and assess the legibility and implications of what I am learning.

During 3 years in SPH, I am most grateful for my growth in terms of taking chances and believing myself. This is true as the flexibility of the project-driven curriculum allows me to express myself and my interests in an academic manner where teachers can guide me through different processes like IA-writing.

This experience prepares me for university and career trajectory. The lessons I gained on initiative and action pushes me to continue being proactive in communities and create sustainable positive impact.

I now believe it is possible for me to execute projects that I am passionate about without fear of failing through the understanding that failure is an inherent stepping stone to success. It encourages me to pursue my ambitions grounded in precision and persistence.
