Turning Barriers into Bridges: My Six-Year Growth at SPH
Chavia
Grade 12 Student
SPH Lippo Village

Before joining SPH, I was worried that I would not be able to follow the curriculum as well as fit in to the new community. Especially since I previously came from a national school, English was not my first language. I was worried that language would be a barrier to my education—thus, not being able to follow the classes like everyone else. Additionally, as I moved into a new school environment amidst the pandemic, I was also worried that I wouldn't be able to fit in socially.
I was hoping that I could immerse myself in a community that would help me grow as a curious learner and broaden my perspective of the world through a Christian worldview.
The immense opportunities provided by the school allowed me to throw myself out there. I think SPH really encourages student-led clubs that allow us, students, to explore our interests and hone our skills to grow as innovative changemakers.
Being in multiple clubs/orgs like the Stuco Support/Outreach Committee and participating in my first ever medical mission trip in 9th grade were truly a few of the most remarkable experiences. I was really inspired by the upperclassmen at the time who were inclusive and encouraging to the young members. Although being one of the younger members, I felt I belonged in a community that wanted to grow and thrive together, especially with the purpose of achieving a common good.
SPH LV's community is tight-knit in the best way possible. Teachers are always open to support us-- even outside of academic work. They are willing to go to the extra mile when we struggle.
One of the things that changed in me is how I perceived failure. The challenges that I have faced taught me that failure is an inevitable part of growth, and that how I respond to them is what matters most.
SPH has taught me to be resilient and compassionate to the people around me.
In my 6 years at SPH, I am most grateful for all the support that I have gained from the people in the community. It is not just the teachers but also the admins, the staff, and security who are always very friendly and know how to make my day.
My experiences at SPH make me hope that in college, I can also be part of a supportive community.
I now believe that I can grow into someone stronger than I once thought. With the right people and resources, I believe I can navigate through the challenges & pathways God has in store for me.
