A Young Math-Whiz in the Making: SPH Sentul City Student’s Achievements in Math Competitions
Ernz Nicholas, a grade 6 student at SPH Sentul City, has an avid interest in mathematics and proved himself as a young, skillful mathematician. During the past 2 years, Ernz participated in several mathematics competitions both nationally and internationally and he brought home many awards.
At the end of last year, when he was still in Grade 5, he earned a Bronze Medal in the Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad (SEAMO) 2020. Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad (SEAMO) is a global mathematical Olympiad competition that provides opportunities for young mathematicians to gain global recognition in Math Olympiad by competing against candidates from many countries.
“It humbles and encourages me knowing that there are so many talented and passionate young mathematicians out there. Praise be to God for this accomplishment. With this, I will have the opportunity to represent Indonesia at the global SEAMO X 2021,” Ernz said.
At the beginning of 2021, he proceeded to the global SEAMO and brought home another award! Ernz received a Merit Award from SEAMO X last January as he competed against many other students from 22 countries.
“For me, SEAMO X is one of the hardest mathematics competitions out there. I felt happy that I can win Merit Award-but I hope I can do better in the future. I have prepared for this competition by going over the topics and any available practice papers,” he added.
Recently, he participated in the World Mathematics Invitational Competition 2021 and received the Silver Award. The competition was highly challenging as he needed to compete with more than 20,000 students from across the globe. Many new and complex questions stimulate his thinking even more.
“I like Math because I feel happy when I can find answers and solutions to the questions. By joining math competitions, it helps to challenge me to be better and there is always something new that I learn. I continue to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to work under pressure within a limited time,” he said.
